Pajrek

Pajrek is a castle ruin located in the western Bohemian Forest at an elevation of 505 meters, featuring the remains of a large prism-shaped tower as its most prominent element. The surviving stone structures reveal how medieval builders created defensive positions on hilltops.

The castle was founded in the early 1300s by the Lords of Janovice as a strategic border defense. It was abandoned in 1472 and left to decay, becoming the ruins visible today.

The Gothic structure displays medieval defensive building methods that visitors can observe in its remaining stonework. The ruins serve as a connection point for locals interested in understanding their regional past.

The ruins can be reached from Nýrsko by following marked hiking trails that climb steeply to the elevated location. Sturdy footwear and some effort are needed to reach the site.

In the 1400s, members of the Janovský family used the castle as a base for robbery operations across the region. Authorities eventually set the structure on fire to put an end to their criminal activities.
