Údolní nádrž Nýrsko, reservoir in Nýrsko, Czech Republic
Údolní nádrž Nýrsko is a reservoir in the Úhlava river valley near Nýrsko, in the Czech Republic, surrounded by forested hills. A stone and concrete dam holds back a large body of water that supplies drinking water to nearby towns.
The reservoir was completed in 1969, when the Úhlava valley was flooded to create a reliable drinking water supply for the region. This permanently replaced the original river course and changed the shape of the land.
The reservoir serves as a place where local people find connection with nature and quiet recreation. Marked trails allow visitors to walk along the water's edge, while swimming and boating are restricted to protect the water supply that the community depends on.
Marked trails run along the shore and allow visitors to walk around the water at a comfortable pace. Swimming and boating are not allowed, as the water is used as a drinking water source.
Before the valley was flooded, people living there had to leave their homes and resettle elsewhere. The remains of those former settlements now lie beneath the surface of the water.
