Střekov Castle, Medieval castle ruins on a cliff in Ústí nad Labem, Czech Republic
Střekov Castle is a castle ruin perched on a cliff above the Elbe River, with several towers and walls remaining from medieval times. The structure rises roughly 230 meters above the water and offers views across the valley from its top.
Construction was ordered in 1316 to protect trade routes on the Elbe and collect tolls from river traffic. Over the centuries, the fortress suffered damage and partial destruction, leaving only these remains of its original structure.
The ruins inspired artists and writers across centuries, drawing people who want to experience the dramatic setting above the river. The location embodies the romantic image of medieval castles deeply rooted in European culture.
Visitors reach the castle from Ústí nad Labem via marked hiking trails that vary depending on which route is chosen. Wear sturdy shoes and allow time to explore, as some areas are uneven and lack modern safety features.
The ruins consist of two separate sections connected by an arched bridge spanning a natural chasm, a rare construction method for this era. This design allowed residents to isolate the sections from each other if needed and made the fortress harder to capture.
