Bečov nad Teplou Chateau, Gothic castle and Baroque chateau in Bečov nad Teplou, Czech Republic.
Bečov nad Teplou Chateau is an architectural complex combining three distinct structures on an elevated site near Karlovy Vary: a Gothic castle, a Renaissance palace, and a Baroque chateau that together form one unified property. The buildings layer different construction periods and styles on top of each other, creating spaces that range from thick stone walls to ornate rooms decorated in classical taste.
The first written record of this site dates to 1317 when the Lords of Rýzmburk founded the original castle. Over the following centuries the complex was enlarged and rebuilt, with Renaissance and Baroque additions reflecting the changing wealth and tastes of successive owners who shaped its growth.
The chapel houses the St. Maurus Reliquary, a precious 13th-century Romanesque goldsmith work containing remains of several saints. This sacred object is now displayed in the blue dining hall and reveals the spiritual importance this location held for pilgrims and worshippers over centuries.
Specialized guided tours are offered, with some programs designed for children that provide access inside without requiring extensive prior knowledge. The surrounding grounds include a botanical garden and a pond where boat rides are available, giving visitors different ways to spend time at the property.
The St. Maurus Reliquary remained hidden in the castle chapel from 1939 until its rediscovery in 1985, surviving war and occupation. This long period of concealment made its eventual discovery a remarkable moment in the modern history of this place.
