Bečov nad Teplou Castle, Medieval castle and chateau complex in Bečov nad Teplou, Czech Republic
Bečov nad Teplou Castle is a medieval fortified complex in the town of Bečov nad Teplou in western Bohemia, Czech Republic, made up of an older Gothic castle and a later chateau built on a rocky spur above the Teplá River. The two main parts are connected by courtyards, staircases, and underground passages that run through the hillside.
The complex was founded in the early 14th century by the Lords of Rýzmburk as a fortified seat, and over time it grew with Renaissance and Baroque additions built onto the original Gothic core. In the 19th century it passed to the Beaufort-Spontini family, who reshaped parts of the chateau.
The castle houses the Reliquary of Saint Maurus, a gilded object from the early Middle Ages that is considered one of the most important in Bohemia and can be seen up close during a tour. People come specifically to stand before it in the room where it is displayed.
Entry to the interior is only possible as part of a guided tour, and different routes are available depending on what visitors want to focus on. The site has multiple levels with uneven surfaces and stairs, so sturdy footwear is recommended.
The Reliquary of Saint Maurus was hidden inside the castle walls for nearly 40 years after World War II before being rediscovered in 1985. A German nobleman had concealed it before being expelled, and it was found by chance during renovation work.
