Šternberk Castle, Gothic castle in Central Bohemia, Czech Republic
Šternberk Castle is a fortress on a granite cliff above the Sazava River with two defensive towers connected by a long palace structure. The castle contains 15 rooms filled with period furniture, artwork, and historical artifacts spanning eight centuries.
The castle was founded in 1241 by Zdeslav of Divisov and became the ancestral home of the Sternberg family. It underwent significant architectural changes over centuries that reflect its long evolution.
The Knights Hall displays furniture and paintings from different periods, including depictions of 17th century events. This collection shows how wealthy families preserved their history through artwork.
The best time to visit is during warmer months when the paths around the castle are easy to walk. Sturdy footwear is recommended since access involves climbing a steep path up the granite cliff.
During the Communist era the owner still lived in the castle and personally guided visitors through the house. This made it a rare example of an inhabited fortress that remained accessible to the public despite political restrictions.
