The depot began operating in 1901 as an active workshop and maintenance facility for locomotives. The museum was founded in 1995 and transformed this place into a repository for important steam locomotives and railway history.
The collection shows how Czech railway engineering developed from the Habsburg era through the 1980s. The maintained locomotives reflect different periods and craft traditions that have since disappeared.
The best time to visit is during warmer months between April and October, when the museum is open daily or on weekends. Visitors should bring appropriate clothing since much time is spent outdoors and pathways cross the railway grounds.
The museum offers rides on authentic steam locomotives where visitors can travel in historic carriages. These journey experiences show what traveling felt like nearly a century ago.
