Nový Hrad, Medieval castle ruin in Lužná, Czech Republic
Nový Hrad is a castle ruin in the Lužná area that consists of foundation walls, six rectangular flanking towers, and a central keep. The keep originally measured about 12 meters across and forms the core of this fortified structure.
The castle was founded in 1368 by Margrave Jan Jindřich and served as a border defense system in a strategic region. It was destroyed in 1471 by Matthias Corvinus and the ruins remain visible to this day.
Local stories tell of a woman named Ofka who locked away a servant and poisoned a maid in a tale of love gone wrong. These tales have shaped how people think about the place and remain part of the local memory.
The ruins can be reached on foot from three starting points: from Raškov train station via a short route, from Bohdíkov via a longer path, or from Kopřivná by road. Wear sturdy shoes as paths can be uneven and access to the ruins requires walking.
The fortress was known by the name Furchtenberg, which reflected its impressive defensive capabilities. Traces of gunpowder explosions are still visible today in the walls of the central keep, showing the force of its destruction.
