Harrachovská hrobka, Neo-Romanesque tomb in Horní Branná, Czech Republic
Harrachovská hrobka is a neo-Romanesque tomb built from red and white sandstone blocks arranged as two octagonal prisms. The structure contains underground chambers where members of the Harrach family were laid to rest.
Construction took place between 1840 and 1870 under František Arnošt Harrach's initiative, replacing an earlier burial site at the Harrach hospital. This new structure reflected the family's desire to create a more dignified resting place for their members.
Inside, black marble plaques display the names and titles of the buried noble family members, including Count Jan Nepomuk Harrach. The place serves as a quiet reminder of the Harrach family's importance to the region.
The tomb functions as a burial site and is used for funeral services for the local community and nearby areas. Visitors should approach with respect, as this is a place of remembrance for the families connected to it.
Below ground, a corridor runs between walls marked with sandstone blocks indicating the exact placement of each coffin containing a family member. This practical method of marking allowed visitors to understand the precise layout of the burial space.
