Jánský Vrch, Baroque château in Javorník, Czech Republic
Jánský Vrch is a château on a rocky hill above the town of Javorník, overlooking the plains toward the Polish towns of Paczków and Nysa. The building complex features several wings with ceremonial rooms, residential quarters, utility spaces, and a courtyard at its centre.
The château came under the rule of the Bishops of Wrocław in 1348 when Bolko II of Świdnica sold the property to Prince-bishop Preczlaus of Pogarell. Over the centuries it shaped the history of this border region between Bohemia and Poland.
The château displays regional craftsmanship through preserved historical textiles, particularly original fabrics and furnishings from earlier centuries. Visitors can see these pieces throughout the rooms and understand how local skills shaped the interior's character.
The château can be explored through guided tours that lead through ceremonial rooms, exhibitions, and service areas, with parking available. Being situated on a hilltop, views of the surrounding landscape vary depending on weather conditions.
The château preserves original gas lighting systems in both the interiors and the main courtyard, offering glimpses into early technical innovation. These working or intact installations reveal how the building adapted to modern conveniences.
