Lysice Castle, Baroque château in Lysice, Czech Republic
Lysice Castle is a baroque château in the village of Lysice in the Czech Republic, originally built as a Renaissance water fortress. The building has several floors with decorated reception rooms, a chapel, and private chambers that still contain their original furnishings.
The property was first recorded as a fortress in 1476 under the Lords of Kunstadt and was rebuilt as a Renaissance water fortress in the 16th century by Divis Cernicky. In the 17th century it was reshaped into its current baroque form when the Mitrovský family took ownership.
The library holds the personal book collection of Marie von Ebner-Eschenbach, a writer who grew up in the castle. The so-called Oriental Room displays Japanese and Chinese objects brought back from sea voyages, and visitors can see them up close today.
The castle offers two separate visiting routes, so you can choose which areas of the interior you want to see. The garden is accessible on its own and makes for a pleasant walk before or after exploring inside.
The castle garden once supplied rare plants from its greenhouses and orangery to well-known botanical gardens and noble estates across the region during the 19th century. This made the garden a small but notable hub for the exchange of botanical rarities at the time.
