Náchod Castle, Baroque château in Náchod, Czech Republic
Náchod Castle is a fortress in the northern Bohemian city of Náchod with multiple courtyards and thick stone walls enclosing the complex. The central tower contains underground chambers and dungeons beneath its foundations.
The fortress was built in the 13th century with Gothic features and was later transformed by Renaissance and Baroque additions. These changes were made as different rulers adapted the building to their needs.
The Piccolomini family left their mark on the place through collections of furniture and artworks that remain visible today. These objects tell stories of noble life and European connections that you can see throughout the rooms.
Visitors can join guided tours that explore different sections and suit various interests within the complex. Wearing good footwear is wise as you will encounter uneven ground and steep staircases throughout the site.
Brown bears now inhabit an enclosure within the original moat of the fortress, which is one of the largest facilities of its kind in the region. This unusual feature makes the place a blend of history and wildlife conservation.
