Moravian Library, Research library in Brno, Czech Republic.
The Moravian Library is a research library in central Brno, housed in a modern building with reading rooms, storage floors, and areas for special collections spread across several levels. Its holdings range from early printed books and handwritten documents to contemporary academic works.
The library was founded in 1770 as the library of the Moravian Economic Society and gradually became an independent research institution over the following century. Its separation from affiliated bodies in the late 19th century set the course for what it is today.
The library holds one of the largest collections of old maps and medieval manuscripts in the Czech Republic, available to visitors in dedicated reading rooms. Those interested in the history of Moravia can consult original documents that are rarely this accessible in any other public institution in the region.
A reader's card is needed to access the collections and can be obtained directly on site. Some areas, including the humanities section, have different opening hours from the rest of the building, so it is worth checking in advance which part you need.
The library holds a collection of several thousand historical globes and cartographic objects, which is unusual in size for Central Europe. Part of this collection is displayed in cases inside the building and can be seen without a full reader registration.
