Kmochův ostrov

Kmochův ostrov is the larger of two islands in the Elbe River near Kolín and provides a green space in the middle of the city. The island features playgrounds, an amphitheater, boat rentals, and connects to both riverbanks through pedestrian bridges.

The original wooden bridge connecting the island was replaced in 1885 with an iron structure built by a Kladno foundry, marking a major upgrade in access. This improvement allowed the island to develop into a public meeting place for the city.

The island carries the name of František Kmoch, a composer and bandmaster who left his mark on Czech music, and now serves as a venue for concerts and festivals throughout the year. Visitors can experience regular cultural programs and live performances in this setting.

The island is easily accessible from both sides of the river via marked pathways and is well suited for walking or picnicking. Visitors should plan their visit during warmer months when boat tours and events are most active.

The entire island is covered with a park featuring natural woodland and open meadows, a rare combination to find in the middle of a city. This blend of nature and facilities creates a peaceful retreat overlooking the river.
