Palacký University Olomouc, Czech university
Palacký University Olomouc is a public university spread across the historic center of Olomouc, with buildings ranging from Baroque-era structures to newer academic facilities. Eight faculties cover fields such as medicine, science, arts, and law.
The university was founded in 1573 by the Jesuit order, making it the oldest institution of higher learning in Moravia. After periods of closure and reorganization, it regained its full university status in 1827.
Many of the buildings around the main square belong to the university, giving the old town a student presence that is easy to notice. Cafes, bookshops, and public spaces near the campus fill with students throughout the day.
The UPoint information center on the main square is a good starting point for orienting yourself on campus and learning about university facilities open to visitors. Fort Science, the university's interactive science museum, is open to the public and worth planning time for.
Gregor Mendel, the 19th-century scientist whose experiments with pea plants laid the foundation for genetics, studied here before going on to his famous work at a monastery in Brno. His time in Olomouc was where his scientific training first took shape.
