Olomouc, Historical city in Moravia, Czech Republic
Olomouc is a city in Moravia in the Czech Republic, located on the Morava River in the central part of the country. The center is shaped by a series of squares surrounded by townhouses from different centuries.
The city grew in the 11th century as a religious center and seat of the bishop and remained one of the most important towns in the Czech lands until the 17th century. After destruction during the Thirty Years' War, it was rebuilt and reshaped in the Baroque style.
The city has a large student population that shapes the rhythm of daily life and keeps many cafés and bookshops busy until late. You will often see groups of young people gathering in the squares, especially during term time.
The old town can be explored on foot as most sights lie on the central squares and are just a few minutes' walk from each other. Many churches are open during the day and can be entered without a ticket.
Six Baroque columns with groups of figures dedicated to different saints stand in the city center and are spread across several squares. Together with the Trinity Column, they form an ensemble that is unusual in its concentration and scale.
