The Holy Trinity Column in Olomouc stands as a stone monument with multi-level structure in the main square, carrying numerous sandstone figures and religious representations. The column extends across several tiers with statues of saints, angels, and symbolic figures filling the entire height of the structure.
Václav Render, an imperial-privileged stonemason, pushed through a grander column on Horní náměstí than the Marian column already planned, and work ran from 1716 to 1754. Render died after the first level; František Thoneck, Jan Václav Rokický and Augustin Scholtz also died before completion, which fell to Rokický's son Jan Ignác. The column was consecrated on 9 September 1754 before Empress Maria Theresa and her husband Francis I.
The column's saints were chosen for their ties to Olomouc: Maurice and Wenceslas, patrons of two city churches, and Aloysius Gonzaga, patron of students, honour the local university. John Sarkander, tortured to death for refusing to break the seal of confession, was placed here before his beatification in 1859 and canonisation in 1995.
The monument sits in the center of the main square and is easy to view from all sides. Note that restoration work continues until 2026 and some areas may not be fully visible.
The chapel inside the column is not open to visitors; its reliefs show Cain's offering, Abel's firstlings, Noah's sacrifice after the Flood, Abraham and Isaac, and Christ's death, with Jerusalem and Olomouc carved in the background of the last panel.
