Olomouc Zoo, Zoo in Svaty Kopecek, Czech Republic

Olomouc Zoo opened in 1956 on 42.5 hectares of forest at the foot of the Low Jeseníky in Svatý Kopeček. Its terraced main building has pale yellow walls, grey-brown stone sections, a planted roof and a wide glazed entrance, with "ZOO OLOMOUC" on a sign above three circular emblems. Six pavilions house giraffes, monkeys, predators, bats, Manchurian leopards and South American fauna.

A provisional animal corner in Olomouc's Smetanovy sady was approved for expansion in 1952, when the Svatý Kopeček site was chosen and preparatory work began. The zoo opened on 3 June 1956 with mainly domestic animals and Czech and European fauna; exotic species arrived in 1958. The safari was completed in 2023 with the Australia and Arctic stages.

The zoo keeps the stud book for East Caucasian turs and is the only Czech zoo breeding Barbary lions; it also breeds both species of anteater. Since 2014 it has been the main partner of The Kukang Rescue Program, a Czech-Indonesian project in North Sumatra founded by Lucie Čižmářová of Olomouc Zoo and František Příbrský of Ostrava Zoo to protect slow lorises.

The grounds are easy to walk through and have an observation tower where you can see the surrounding area. Visitors should wear comfortable shoes and plan enough time to explore all sections.

The predator pavilion houses a large aquarium where sharks and other marine creatures can be observed. This underwater experience is an unexpected attraction within a forest setting.
