Kaple svatého Jana Sarkandra, Baroque chapel near Gorni Square in Olomouc, Czech Republic
Saint John Sarkander Chapel is a two-story building in Olomouc distinguished by a distinctive dome with a lantern that crowns its cylindrical structure. This architectural feature allows natural light to enter the prayer space below, illuminating the interior.
The building stands on the site of a former city prison where Catholic priest Jan Sarkander was tortured and died in 1620 for refusing to break the seal of confession. The chapel was later built at this location as a memorial to his resistance and faith.
The interior displays paintings by Jakub Obrovsky and Jano Köhler showing scenes from the priest's life and struggles. These artworks help visitors connect with the personal story of the man the chapel commemorates.
Access is through a double-arm staircase decorated with statues of Saint John Nepomuk and Saint John Sarkander on the sides. The chapel can often be viewed from outside, though visiting during opening hours allows you to see the full interior and the underground chamber below.
The chapel floor features a circular opening that reveals the underground prison chamber with original torture instruments from Sarkander's time. This design creates a direct connection between the prayer space above and the place of suffering below.
