Zoo Pilsen, Zoo and botanical garden in Pilsen, Czech Republic
Zoo Pilsen is a combined zoo and botanical garden housing over 6,500 animals from more than 1,000 species and diverse plant collections. The grounds span 21 hectares and include various themed sections with specialized enclosures and garden areas.
The facility was founded in 1926 and originally stood near the Radbuza River. In 1963 it relocated to the Lochotín district, and in 1981 it merged with the botanical garden.
The Japanese garden Showa-en showcases traditional landscaping principles with carefully arranged plants and water features. The Lüftnerka Farm demonstrates local livestock breeds and farming methods that reflect regional agricultural heritage.
The zoo operates on a seasonal schedule: March to October from 8 AM to 7 PM and November to February from 9 AM to 5 PM. Arriving early is advisable as animals are more active in warmer months and morning visits encounter fewer crowds.
The Underground World section occupies a former wartime air-raid shelter converted for the zoo. This repurposed bunker provides habitats for nocturnal and subterranean creatures, allowing visitors to observe species that would typically remain hidden.
