Český Krumlov Castle, Medieval castle in Latrán, Czech Republic.

Český Krumlov Castle is a fortress perched on a rocky promontory above the Vltava River, made up of forty buildings arranged around five courtyards. The complex spans seven hectares and includes residential spaces, administrative buildings, and decorative structures, most notably a five-story bridge linking different sections of the site.

The castle was founded in 1253 and passed through several powerful families, including the Rosenbergs, Eggenbergs, and Schwarzenbergs, each leaving their mark on the site. It became state property in 1950, transforming from a private noble residence into a publicly accessible monument.

The castle displays Renaissance details in its palaces, particularly the Rosenberg Palace with its ornate decorations and careful design. These architectural choices reflect the tastes and prosperity of the noble families who made this place their home over many centuries.

Visitors should note that opening hours vary by season, particularly during winter months, so advance planning is important. Guided tours are offered in multiple languages, and certain areas may require reservations for larger groups or special access.

Within the castle grounds lies the oldest preserved Baroque theater in the world, which still retains its original stage machinery and historic costumes. This collection offers a rare glimpse into the theatrical arts and entertainment practices of earlier times.
