Bedřichov Reservoir, reservoir in Bedřichov, Czech Republic
Bedřichov Reservoir is a large body of water in the village of Bedřichov, nestled in the Jizerské hory mountains. The water reflects the surrounding greenery and sky, and stretches across a forested valley where birds and wildlife move freely through the landscape.
The reservoir was planned after a devastating flood in July 1897 and built between 1902 and 1909 by Austrian and German companies. The stone and concrete dam was designed to control the Zhořelecká Nisa river and protect surrounding villages from future flooding.
The name Bedřichov comes from Slavic roots meaning "Bedrich's home". Local families use the banks regularly for walks and informal gatherings, making it a woven part of community life that changes little from season to season.
The area is easy to access with parking nearby and marked walking paths around the water. The gentle terrain allows visitors of all abilities to stroll along the shore or sit by the edge, and during winter months snow-covered trails become suitable for cross-country skiing.
The dam has powered a small hydroelectric plant for over 100 years, continuously generating electricity for local homes and businesses without modification to its original design. This early example of water-based power generation shows how the dam's construction brought benefits beyond flood control.
