Jan Hus Memorial, Bronze monument at Old Town Square, Czech Republic.
The Jan Hus Memorial is a multi-figure bronze sculpture on a Sedlčan granite pedestal standing on Old Town Square. The group shows several people in different poses and combines religious symbolism with Czech national narrative.
Sculptor Ladislav Šaloun worked nearly two decades on this piece, unveiled in 1915 exactly 500 years after the reformer's death. Completion came during a period of political tensions within the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy.
The memorial recalls a theologian who wrote his sermons in Czech and strengthened the self-awareness of local communities. Today people gather before the monument during ceremonial events and lay flowers to remember his ideas.
The sculpture stands freely accessible in the middle of the square and can be viewed from all sides at any time. On weekends and holidays many visitors gather around the monument, so morning photos work better.
The composition design reflects Art Nouveau influences even though the work was created during a time when other artistic movements already dominated. The artist lived at times under difficult conditions and worked without a permanent studio on the design.
