Lány Castle

Lány Castle is a stately home in Lány, Czech Republic, featuring Renaissance and Baroque architectural styles combined in its design. The main building connects to an adjacent church through a covered passageway, and the entire complex sits within extensive park grounds with walking paths.

The castle originated in the 15th century when it was built upon the remains of an earlier medieval fortress on the site. In 1589, Emperor Rudolf II purchased it and transformed it into a hunting lodge that reflected his taste in architecture.

The castle serves as the summer residence of the Czech president and holds special meaning in the nation's public memory as a symbol of state tradition. The park allows visitors to experience the grounds where important moments in Czech history have taken place, even though the main building itself remains private.

The main building remains closed to visitors, but the surrounding park and its walking paths are freely accessible to the public year-round. The grounds are easy to navigate on foot and provide good views of the buildings and natural landscape.

Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk, the first president of Czechoslovakia, is buried in the Lány cemetery on the castle grounds, making it a site of national memory. This burial place transformed the estate into a place where people can pay respects to a founding figure of the modern Czech state.
