Grave of Masaryk family, Family tomb in Lány, Czech Republic

The Masaryk family tomb is a walled structure on the municipal cemetery in Lány, built before 1937. It lies in the northeast corner by the boundary wall: a wide rectangular plot covered with grass, edged by sandy paths and enclosed by a low wooden picket fence. At the eastern head, four low plain granite blocks set into the ground carry bronze plaques with names and dates; two linden trees stand on either side.

Masaryk died at Lány Castle on 14 September 1937; his state funeral on 21 September ended with burial in this tomb, built before his death. His wife Charlotta Garrigue-Masaryková, dead since 1923, was moved into it the evening before. Their son Jan, who died on 10 March 1948, and daughter Alice, transferred in 1966, were later placed here.

The grave lies in the municipal cemetery in Lány, not a separate cemetery of its own. Masaryk chose to be buried beside his wife Charlotta Garrigue-Masaryková, who died in 1923 and was moved into the tomb the evening before his funeral. Their son Jan Masaryk, who died on 10 March 1948, and daughter Alice Masaryková, transferred in 1966, rest here too.

The tomb stands in the northeast corner of the Lány cemetery, against the boundary wall, and is reached by sandy footpaths. It is a wide rectangular plot covered with grass, enclosed by a low wooden picket fence, with two linden trees flanking it. Four low unpolished granite blocks set into the ground at the eastern head carry bronze plaques with names and dates.

Masaryk wanted a simple grave covered with grass, and originally wished to be buried at Prague's Olšany cemetery beside his son Herbert, who died in 1915. He also considered a spot near the Hvězda summer palace, in a circle of executed Italian legionaries. He rests in Lány beside his wife Charlotta instead.
