Peeing Statues, Bronze fountain at Cihelná street, Prague, Czech Republic

The Peeing Statues are two bronze male figures positioned facing each other in a water pool shaped like the Czech Republic, located in front of the Franz Kafka Museum. They can be controlled remotely via text messages to create words and messages using their water streams.

Artist David Černý created this work in 2004 at the site of a former brickworks complex that was being transformed into a cultural area. The installation marked the artistic renewal of this once-industrial space.

The rotating figures write messages on water using their streams, representing a commentary on Czech behavior and social interactions in public spaces.

Visitors can send text messages to control the figures and watch them write different words and phrases. The installation operates during standard hours and is located on a street corner near the Franz Kafka Museum, making it easy to find and observe.

The fountain basin contains an engraved map of the Czech Republic, while computerized mechanisms control the figures' hip movements and water direction.
