Slovanský ostrov, River island in New Town, Czech Republic.
Slovanský ostrov is a river island in the Vltava, located in Prague's New Town between Jirásek Bridge and Legion Bridge, with walking paths and green areas. At its center stands a neo-Renaissance palace that functions as a venue for events and concerts.
The island took on its current shape after the flood of 1784, which changed its outline and required the construction of protective walls. Through the 19th century, it was gradually developed with a palace and public facilities.
The name Slovanský ostrov means "Slavic Island" in Czech, a direct reference to the Slavic congress held there in 1848. Today, the island's palace still hosts concerts and social events, keeping the site part of Prague's public life.
The island is accessible on foot from both banks of the Vltava via short footbridges and is easy to walk at any time of day or year. The paths are flat and step-free, making it a comfortable option for visitors with reduced mobility.
Before its current name, the island was called Žofín, after Sophie of Bavaria, and before that Barvířský, a name that points to its earlier use by dyers. This sequence of names traces the island's shift from a working site to a place of public life.
