The Božena Němcová Society announced a public competition for a stone monument in 1940, on the 120th anniversary of the writer's birth, but no proposal was accepted, and a second competition in 1941 also failed. After 1948 the design by sculptor Karel Pokorný and architect Jaroslav Fragner won; the bronze statue was made in 1955 and listed as a cultural monument in 1962.
