Cesta hrdinov SNP, Long-distance hiking trail between Dukla Pass and Devin Castle, Slovakia.
Cesta hrdinov SNP is a long-distance trail that runs from Dukla Pass to Devin Castle in Slovakia, following red markers through the Carpathians, Tatra and the Little Carpathians. The path crosses forests, mountain meadows and rocky ridges, linking valleys and high mountain passes.
The route was opened in 1956 and follows places and paths that played a role during the uprising of 1944. Partisans used the mountains as a retreat area and as connections between resistance centers.
The name refers to the Slovak National Uprising, whose routes and sites the markings connect. Along the mountain huts and villages, hikers encounter memorial plaques, monuments and local stories that recall the events of 1944.
The best time to hike is between spring and autumn, when paths are passable and huts are usually open. Some sections at higher elevations require sure footing, especially after rain or in early spring.
The trail is part of the European E8 network, which stretches from the Atlantic to the Aegean. Record runners have completed the entire distance in less than a week, though most hikers need several weeks.
