Vysoký Chlumec Castle, Medieval castle in Vysoký Chlumec, Czech Republic
Vysoký Chlumec Castle is a Gothic stone fortress set on a steep rocky hill in the village of Vysoký Chlumec in Bohemia, Czech Republic. It consists of towers, stone walls, and defensive structures that take advantage of the elevated terrain on all sides.
The castle was built in the 14th century and passed through the hands of several Bohemian noble families over the following centuries, including the Lobkowicz family from 1474 onward. During World War II it was seized, and after 1945 it eventually received the status of a protected cultural monument.
The castle walls follow the shape of the rock below, showing how medieval builders worked with the land rather than against it. Visitors walking the perimeter can still read the defensive logic in the way the towers are placed.
The path up to the castle is steep, so wear sturdy shoes and take your time on the way up. Once at the top, give yourself enough time to walk around the full perimeter of the walls and towers.
A brewery founded on the castle grounds in 1466 kept producing beer for over five centuries before finally closing in 2021. That makes it one of the longest continuously operating breweries in Bohemia.
