Albeřická jeskyně, Underground cave system in Horní Maršov, Czech Republic.
Albeřická jeskyně is a limestone cave network with multiple levels containing corridors, chambers, and passages of varying sizes. It holds the largest subterranean lake in the Czech Republic, which occupies several sections throughout the system.
The cave was discovered in 1887 during limestone quarrying operations but remained largely unexplored for decades. Systematic research began in 1968 and gradually revealed the full extent of the underground network.
The cave provides a critical winter refuge for several bat species that roost in different sections depending on their needs. Visitors can observe how this underground space functions as a living ecosystem.
The cave maintains a constant temperature of around 7 degrees Celsius year-round, so bring warm clothing and wear sturdy, slip-resistant shoes. The surfaces throughout the passages are frequently wet and slippery, making proper footwear essential.
In 2019, researchers deployed pumps to lower water levels by 17 meters, revealing passages that had been hidden beneath the lake. This effort uncovered approximately 340 meters of previously unknown tunnels within the system.
