The Baroque Theatre sits in the fifth courtyard of Cesky Krumlov Castle and connects to the main building through a covered passage. The space features a stage, orchestra pit, and seating areas with original furnishings from its period of use.
A ruling prince built the independent theatre building between 1680 and 1682 to replace earlier performance spaces. This construction represented one of the first purpose-built castle theatres in the region.
The theatre keeps a repertoire of librettos, scripts and sheet music alongside hundreds of costumes, props and lighting devices. Its stage sets include 17 backdrops such as a columned hall, military camp, garden, city, dungeon and jungle. An annual Baroque festival in June stages performances in the historic space.
The theatre is reached through the fifth courtyard of Český Krumlov Castle and can only be seen on a guided tour; the castle's separate theatre tour route has been open to visitors since 1997. Performances are rare, mainly during the annual Baroque festival in June, when seating is very limited.
The stage machinery is entirely of wood and needs 35 people to operate it. Sliding 250 original wings and 40 soffits, the crew changes between 17 settings — columned hall, military camp, garden, city, dungeon or jungle — without interrupting the performance.
