The Baroque Theatre sits in the fifth courtyard of Cesky Krumlov Castle and connects to the main building through a covered passage. The space features a stage, orchestra pit, and seating areas with original furnishings from its period of use.
A ruling prince built the independent theatre building between 1680 and 1682 to replace earlier performance spaces. This construction represented one of the first purpose-built castle theatres in the region.
The theatre holds original stage sets and personal items from centuries of performances within its walls. These objects show how productions were once created and staged here.
It is best to check in advance for tour times since the theatre building is not freely accessible on your own. Guided visits allow you to see the mechanisms and stage sets up close and take photographs.
The theatre hides a sophisticated stage machinery system that can completely swap scenery in less than a minute. These wooden mechanisms were designed by a Viennese craftsman and still operate by the same principles.
