Jesuit College, Baroque Jesuit college in Kutná Hora, Czech Republic.
The Jesuit College is a Baroque building with an F-shaped floor plan and elaborate facade elements, designed by Italian architect Giovanni Domenico Orsi. The structure displays typical features of this style with symmetrically arranged wings and decorative details across its exterior surfaces.
The Jesuits arrived in Kutná Hora in 1626, but construction of the college began only after the Thirty Years War ended. After the order was dissolved in 1773, the building served military and medical purposes for many decades.
The gallery housed within the college shows contemporary art through rotating exhibitions that change seasonally. Visitors can walk through spaces dedicated to works from the 20th and 21st centuries by regional creators.
The building is located on Barborská Street and is accessible through guided tours that explain the architecture and history. Visitors should allow enough time to explore the rooms and exhibitions at a relaxed pace.
After its dissolution in 1773, the building was used as barracks, a hospital, and a warehouse before finding new purpose in 1997. This long period of changing uses shaped the structure and shows how buildings adapt to different needs.
