Chapel of Corpus Christi

The Chapel of Corpus Christi is a Gothic building standing near St Barbara Cathedral in Kutná Hora. Its two-story structure includes a lower floor that once functioned as an ossuary where human remains were stored and preserved.

Construction of this Gothic chapel began in the 1380s alongside St Barbara Cathedral as part of a new cemetery development. Over the following centuries ownership changed several times, especially after the Jesuits departed in 1773.

The chapel was used by Jesuits and later became a storage space for local merchants after they left. Today visitors can see how this space transformed from a religious building into a practical storage facility that served the community.

The chapel can be visited during regular cathedral tours which show the interior spaces and preserved details. Visitors should wear sturdy shoes since the lower floors can be damp and slippery from groundwater and humidity.

The interior contains rare High Gothic architectural elements from the 14th century that remain almost completely intact. These details reveal the craftsmanship and artistic skill of the chapel's original builders.
