Štěpánka, Stone observation tower in Příchovice, Czech Republic
Štěpánka is a cylindrical stone observation tower in Příchovice, in the Czech Republic, standing 24 m (79 ft) tall on a ridge of the Jizera Mountains and listed as a cultural monument. Its top platform offers an open view over the surrounding mountain ridges and valleys.
A visit by Archduke Stephan in 1847 started the push to build the tower, but work stalled and the structure sat unfinished for decades. A local mountain association completed it in 1892, turning it into a working viewpoint for hikers.
The name Štěpánka is the Czech form of Stephan, taken from the archduke who inspired the project. Today the tower draws walkers from across the region who come to look out over the Jizera Mountains and the Giant Mountains from the top platform.
The tower is reached by marked hiking trails from Příchovice, and the ground around it can be slippery when wet, so sturdy footwear is a good idea. Getting to the top platform involves climbing a narrow spiral staircase, which visitors with limited mobility should keep in mind.
On a clear day, the Elbe Sandstone Rocks are visible from the platform even though they lie far outside the surrounding mountain area. This ability to spot such a distant landscape makes the tower stand out from other viewpoints in the region.
