Písek Gate, Baroque city gate in Hradčany, Prague, Czech Republic
Písek Gate is a baroque city gate in Hradčany featuring a semi-circular vehicle passage framed by smaller pedestrian entrances on both sides. The stone structure is decorated with detailed head motifs and carved elements throughout its design.
The gate was built in 1721 as part of Prague's fortification system to control northbound traffic. It stands as the final remaining entrance from the original three city gates that once guarded the left bank.
The gate exhibits different architectural styles on each side, with white and blue tones facing Prague Castle and stone carvings on the opposite facade.
Today this structure functions as a gallery space, wedding venue, and cafe housed under brick-vaulted ceilings. Visitors can explore its interiors and spend time in the public areas available within.
Moss and natural vegetation grow on the gate's roof and walls, creating a weathered and organic appearance. This green growth distinguishes it from other baroque structures in the city.
