Želinský meandr, Natural monument in Kadaň, Czech Republic
Želinský meandr is a protected natural area along the Ohře River where a distinctive river bend dominates the landscape. The site contains varied habitats including muddy riverbanks and dry heathland that support uncommon wildlife.
The area received official protection status as a natural monument in 1992 and was reaffirmed again in 2013. This designation demonstrates long-term commitment to preserving this exceptional landscape.
The name comes from the distinctive river bend that water has carved over thousands of years. Visitors can observe how this natural process has shaped the local landscape and geography.
Visitors should wear sturdy footwear since the paths along the riverbanks can be uneven and sometimes slippery. The main access is via marked walking trails on the left bank of the river.
The green lizard, a rare reptile species, finds one of its few European refuges here and lives in the dry heathland areas. This species prefers warmer microhabitats that are particularly common in the river bend.
