Sluice Miřejovice, Lock and bridge complex in Veltrusy and Nelahozeves, Czech Republic.
The Sluice Miřejovice is a waterworks and bridge crossing the Vltava that links Nelahozeves and Veltrusy. It consists of a steel truss structure with multiple spans that allows boats to pass through controlled shipping channels below.
The structure was built between 1900 and 1904, replacing an earlier wooden bridge from 1755 that had been destroyed by a major flood in 1784. This new construction provided a stronger and more reliable crossing for both transportation and water management.
The waterworks show how the community has managed water flow and river traffic for generations. Visitors can see the working mechanisms that govern both water release and boat passage through the channels.
You can view the complex from above on the bridge itself or from the water below to see how the lock gates operate. The site is accessible year-round, though weather and water levels may affect visibility and boat navigation.
The bridge features narrow-gauge railway tracks that were used to control the sluice gates mechanically. These tracks remain visible and represent an ingenious engineering solution from the early 1900s.
