Бероун

Beroun is an administrative district in the Central Bohemian Region that covers an area of 703 square kilometers (271 square miles). It encompasses 85 municipalities organized around the Berounka River, with rolling terrain dotted by forests and river valleys.

Human settlement in this area dates back to ancient times, but the region gained significant influence during the rule of King Ottokar II when fortifications were established. The current administrative district was created in 2003 to organize this evolving territory more effectively.

The district shows its medieval roots through small villages with old church spires and traditional houses scattered across the countryside. These settlements reveal how communities developed and shaped the land over many generations.

The district is well connected by the D5 motorway linking it to Prague and Germany, with additional railway lines serving various towns. Most visitors spend several days exploring the villages and countryside, depending on which areas interest them most.

The Berounka River is known for whitewater activities, especially where it flows through narrow gorges between villages. Kayakers and fishermen make active use of the river, making it a living part of local recreation throughout the year.
