Zámecká věž, Burg in Karlsbad, Tschechien
Zámecká věž is an ancient stone tower in Karlovy Vary that stands on a granite outcrop in the town center. The structure has a rectangular base with three floors and features a pointed roof that has survived for centuries.
The tower was built around 1358 and originally served as a defensive structure to protect the town. A major fire in 1604 destroyed much of the surrounding castle complex, but the tower survived and was later repurposed as a watchtower.
The tower's name refers to its origin as a castle structure, and today it serves as a gathering place where locals and visitors can observe the town from above. The site connects people to the medieval period when such fortifications protected settlements.
The tower is easily reached from the town center on foot or by bus, with several routes leading to the site. A modern elevator on the exterior provides straightforward access to the viewing platform at the top.
The top of the tower was originally fitted with a small bell that served as an alarm system, alerting the population to fire or danger. This bell reflects the practical functions that medieval fortifications performed for their communities.
