Průhonice Castle, Renaissance Revival castle in Průhonice, Czech Republic
Průhonice Castle is a Renaissance Revival château featuring a horseshoe-shaped layout with a north facade decorated by a turreted gable and clock tower. The structure sits within landscaped grounds that stretch across the surrounding terrain.
Count Johann Nepomuk of Nostitz-Rieneck purchased the estate in 1800 and commissioned an extensive Classicist reconstruction that transformed the structure. This renovation established the architectural character the building carries today.
The inner courtyard displays a fresco of Saint George slaying the dragon, painted by artist Hanuš Schwaiger in 1892. This religious artwork shows how faith was expressed through the castle's decoration.
Guided tours through the castle rooms are available in multiple languages and run regularly throughout the week. The site is easily navigable on foot, and a café on the grounds offers refreshments and light meals.
The castle sits within a 250-hectare (617-acre) park housing rare plant species and functioning as a botanical research center. This green setting gives visitors the chance to explore both historic architecture and living plant collections.
