Lechův kámen, Rock formation and memorial stone in Kouřim, Czech Republic
Lechův kámen is a gneiss rock formation standing on Stará Kouřim hill, rising about 3 meters (10 feet) high with a circumference of roughly 30 meters (100 feet). The gray stone mass rises noticeably above the surrounding meadow and is visible from various angles.
The stone was originally called Kámen Veliký and renamed Lechův kámen in the 1800s. This renaming connected it to the early founding story of the Bohemian lands.
Local tradition ties this stone to the founding legend of Bohemia, where it served as a communication point between legendary leaders. The place remains rooted in the memory of early settlement stories.
The site sits about 700 meters east of central Kouřim and is accessible via a marked walking trail. The location is on elevated ground, so visitors should wear sturdy shoes and consider weather conditions before visiting.
The stone sits roughly one kilometer from where the 15th meridian east and 50th parallel north intersect. This point marks an interesting astronomical location in Central Europe.
