Velká skála

Velká skála is a rock formation made of silicified stone that stretches for several hundred meters and creates a visible ridge in northern Prague. The rocks display different layers and structures that you can observe directly while walking through the area.

The rocks formed hundreds of millions of years ago at the bottom of an ancient sea as chemical deposits. Later the formation was repeatedly washed by sea waves while surrounding areas remained flooded.

Today this site serves as a learning area where marked trails show how nature develops in an urban setting. People come here to see the rocks and understand how the landscape formed.

The site is easily reached by public transport and has well-marked walking trails for visitors. The paths are relatively easy to navigate, though the terrain is hilly and sturdy shoes are recommended.

The rocks were surrounded by water during different periods of ancient sea advancement, yet today they stand out from the modern urban landscape. This contrast shows how dramatically the landscape can change over millions of years.
