Velká skála, Natural monument in Troja, Czech Republic
The silicified rock formation extends for 500 meters in length and reaches heights between 40 to 50 meters, forming a prominent ridge in northern Prague.
The rocks of Velká skála originated 600 million years ago as chemical sediments at the bottom of an ancient sea during the Proterozoic period.
The natural monument functions as an educational site with marked trails that demonstrate geological processes and natural succession in an urban environment.
Visitors can access Velká skála by taking a bus to Dunajecká stop from Kobylisy metro station C and following the green hiking trail markers.
The rock formation stood as an island during multiple marine transgressions throughout the Paleozoic and Mesozoic eras, while surrounding areas remained submerged.
