Velvarská Gate is a medieval city gate and museum in Slaný standing approximately 38 meters tall with a passage around 8 meters in length and 4.7 meters in both width and height. The gate houses exhibits on city development and fortification history, offering visitors insight into medieval defensive architecture.
The gate underwent renovation during the reign of George of Poděbrady in 1453 and received the designation 'New Gate' with Latin inscriptions on its inner walls. This reconstruction marked an important moment in Slaný's defensive fortification development.
The gate displays carved guild emblems and the municipal coat of arms above its northern passage, reflecting medieval craftsmanship and civic identity.
The gate museum is open from May through October and requires advance reservation for guided tours of the fortification and settlement development exhibits. It is advisable to book ahead to arrange tours and plan your visit during the appropriate season.
A copper rooster sits atop the gate's spire as a symbol of vigilance. This weathervane was installed in 1868 as a replica of the original piece from 1612.
