Kostel svatého Petra a Pavla, Romanesque church in Řeznovice, Czech Republic
The Church of St. Peter and Paul is a Romanesque church with three semicircular apses surrounding a central square structure, topped by an octagonal tower with a stone pyramid roof. The building combines classic Romanesque architectural forms with locally adapted design elements.
The building was constructed in the second half of the 12th century after 1160 under Prince Konrad II Otto of Znojmo as part of his estate. In the 16th century it underwent significant modifications when the western section was demolished and replaced with a Renaissance nave.
The eastern apse displays preserved stone ornaments with arcade friezes and pilaster-like corner reinforcements that alternate between circular and linear patterns. These decorations reflect the skill and resources of the builders who created this place of worship.
The building welcomes visitors during Sunday services, where its three bells can be heard, with the oldest dating from 1483. To explore the interior, visitors should time their visit around these service times to experience the full character of the place.
The western side retained traces of Renaissance reconstruction that interrupted the original Romanesque design. This transition shows how local churches adapted to changing architectural styles of their era.
