Baška Reservoir, reservoir in Baška, Czech Republic
Baška Reservoir is a dam on the Baštice stream, a tributary of the Ostravice, at the northeastern edge of Baška, about 5 km southeast of Frýdek-Místek. Its long earthen dam, 963 m long and 7.9 m high, encloses roughly a third of the shoreline. The reservoir is shallow, reaching barely 6 m, and has been drained since autumn 2023.
The reservoir was built between 1958 and 1961 on the initiative of the Ostrava regional national committee, mainly to improve flows in the Ostravice during droughts, but recreational use soon prevailed. A pond existed on the lower Baštice already in the 16th century. After 1969 the larger Šance reservoir took over the balancing function.
A pond is recorded at this spot on the lower Baštice as early as the 16th century, though it later disappeared; the present reservoir was built between 1958 and 1961 on the initiative of the regional national committee in Ostrava. Its intended role of improving Ostravice flows in dry spells was soon overtaken by recreation, and since 1969 the balancing function has belonged to the larger Šance reservoir.
The reservoir lies at the northeastern edge of Baška, less than 5 km southeast of the centre of Frýdek-Místek, on the Baštice stream. The dam is a long earthen embankment, 963 m along its crest and 7.9 m high, wrapping about a third of the shoreline. From autumn 2023 the reservoir was emptied for reconstruction of the outlet, and the dam was to reopen in autumn 2025.
The dam is a 963-metre earth-fill embankment holding back a reservoir barely 6 metres deep, built in 1958–1961 by the Ostrava regional authority to boost Ostravice flows in dry spells; recreational use soon dominated, and after 1969 the larger Šance reservoir took over that balancing role. A pond stood on the lower Baštice here as early as the 16th century.
