Údolní nádrž Klíčava, reservoir in Zbečno, Czech Republic
Údolní nádrž Klíčava is a water reservoir in the Křivoklátsko region near Zbečno, surrounded by forests and fed by the Klíčava River and several small streams. The concrete dam stands about 50 meters high and nearly 180 meters long, with a walkable crest offering views over the water and surrounding woodland.
The reservoir was constructed between 1948 and 1955 to supply drinking water to the nearby town of Kladno and surrounding areas, with young monks assisting in the construction work. Water treatment began in 1952 during the building phase, and regular supply to Kladno commenced in 1954.
Visitors can walk along the dam crest and explore the surrounding area via marked hiking trails starting from Zbečno or nearby Křivoklát, with red or green trail markers showing the way. The site is accessible by car or on foot, though the inner water protection zone remains restricted to preserve the water source.
In the middle of the lake lies a forested island, and on an adjacent hillside stand the ruins of Jivno, an old fortified structure that adds a mysterious element to the landscape. These remains are visible from afar and hint at human settlement before the waters flooded the valley.
