Vodní nádrž Pilská, reservoir in Žďár nad Sázavou, Czech Republic
Vodní nádrž Pilská is a reservoir on the Sázava River in Žďár nad Sázavou, built in 1962 to supply water to local industry and protect the city from flooding. The earthen dam spans about 300 meters and stands over 8 meters high, holding nearly 2 million cubic meters of water across its 75-hectare surface.
The reservoir was built in 1962 on the site of an older fishpond called Pilský, originally created to supply water for the growing machinery industry in the region. Over time it evolved into a recreational area while maintaining its core functions of water storage and flood protection for the city.
The area is accessible from April to October depending on weather, with two campgrounds offering facilities, plus walking and cycling paths through surrounding nature. A large car park near Hotel Tálský Mlýn makes access straightforward, and sandy beaches with grassy areas provide comfortable spots to rest.
The historic boundary between Bohemia and Moravia runs across the dam, marking a regional division that once separated territories and remains a quiet reminder of the area's past. Walking across this line, visitors pass through centuries of regional identity without notice.
