Věznice Heřmanice, Gefängnis in Tschechien
Heřmanice Prison is a correctional facility in Hrušov, roughly 5 kilometers from central Ostrava, with capacity for about 675 inmates. The facility is divided into separate sections including units for different security levels and, since 2013, a section dedicated to young offenders.
The site was originally built in 1959 as a labor camp to provide workers for local mining operations. During the 1970s, the facility underwent extensive renovation that gave it its current form and transformed it into a modern correctional complex with multiple security levels.
Visitors should know the prison is located in a quiet area outside the city center with limited public transport and parking availability. It is advisable to check visiting rules and hours beforehand, as access is strictly regulated for security reasons.
Since its redesign in the 1970s, the facility has operated specialized units for different inmate groups, including programs for substance abuse treatment and behavior management. These specialized services make it one of the more complex facilities in the Czech corrections system.
