Věznice Jiřice, Gefängnis in Tschechien
Věznice Jiřice is a correctional facility located in the Czech village of Jiřice, approximately 60 km east of Prague. The institution was established in the 1990s within converted Soviet military barracks and operates with a total capacity of around 700 inmates distributed across cells with various security levels.
The facility was established in the early 1990s on the grounds of a former Soviet military complex as the Czech Republic required expanded prison capacity. The conversion of these barracks into a modern correctional institution represented a significant transition in reshaping the Czech justice system following the fall of communism.
The facility sits in a rural location between fields and is best reached by taxi, as walking distances are long and remote. Visits must be arranged in advance and take place in the dining hall where vending machines are available, so plan extra time for conversations as the space can be noisy.
The complex was originally a Soviet military base and now houses a specialized program where inmates train and socialize dogs to assist people with disabilities. This rehabilitation project shows that the prison goes beyond punishment alone and provides inmates with meaningful work.
